Over 60 New Jersey towns have successfully negotiated with the Fair Share Housing Center to lower their affordable housing targets for 2025–2035. While none got reductions as steep as requested, towns like Roxbury saw sizable cuts — from 989 to 499 units. The Fair Share Housing Center contested 67 petitions, and negotiations are being overseen by retired judges. Meanwhile, the New Jersey Builders Association is suing all towns seeking reductions, arguing they’re trying to shed a collective 14,000 units. Municipalities must submit their affordable housing plans by June, as the state aims to add 85,000 units over the next decade.
