Community Board 13 in Brooklyn recently voted against changing land use rules for Joseph Sitt’s $3 billion “The Coney” casino project, opposing the closure of Bowery Street and the acquisition of air rights. However, the vote is advisory, and the state will still consider community support when selecting developers for gaming licenses. If the rezoning process fails, the developer may need to reduce the project’s size and eliminate sky bridges. The proposed 1.4-million-square-foot complex includes a hotel, concert venue, retail, and event spaces. Similar opposition to casino projects has occurred in Manhattan, with a recent rejection of Wynn’s Hudson Yards proposal.
