A recent report by the New York Committee for Occupational Safety & Health (NYCOSH) revealed that 2023 was the deadliest year for New York City’s construction industry in a decade, with 30 worker fatalities — marking the third consecutive annual increase. Statewide, there were 44 additional deaths outside the city. NYCOSH highlighted incidents like the tragic collapse at JFK Airport and the death of a 19-year-old traffic director. Concerns are growing over declining federal oversight, with OSHA’s average fine for construction fatalities dropping to $32,123, the lowest in six years.
