A report from the Regional Plan Association has highlighted a troubling forecast for New York City, which could lose more than 19,000 homes to flooding in the next 15 years due to rising sea levels and intensified storms. This is expected to be even more destructive than the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Coastal neighborhoods, particularly in areas like the Rockaways, Broad Channel, and parts of Queens and Brooklyn, face the highest risks. The housing crisis may worsen as flood risks increase, with tens of thousands of homes on Long Island and in Westchester County also threatened. The report warns that the city’s housing market could be severely impacted unless proactive measures are taken to expand housing supply and enhance flood protection efforts.
